About Us,To inherit the skills of 400 years

Ishigaki-yaki Pottery Studio opened on June 20, 1999 in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. However, our Skills are based on Koishiwara pottery (450 years of history in Fukuoka), Ichinose pottery (400 years of history in fukuoka ) and Yoron-yaki pottery (established in 1970 in Kagoshima).

In 1964, Mr. Kiyomi Kaneko (- 2000) was the person who did success about fusion of glass and pottery first in the world.

His son,Haruhiko kaneko evolved father`s skills and technology. We could do greater flexibility in blue and green colour and texture the glass and Ishigaki-yaki pottery go over and over to imporove even more beautiful to express the attitude of many kinds of Yuteki Temmoku ( Oil drop pattern)．By the high quality of expressiveness, we have greater evaluation of art and crafts day by day.

How to make marine blue and Emerald green inside of clear glass.

We found mineral ores (stones) and when they melt into clear glass, it turned to marine blue and emerald green by special firing technique. It was new history of pottery in the world.

Why we make Yuteki Temmoku for our brand?

Yuteki Temmoku tea bowl (national treasure) was used by Mr. Rikyu Senno (1522-1591) who is a founder of tea ceremony in Kyoto. This tea bowl was dignity and authority after he used this tea bowl and used for imperial court and feudal loads (Shougun).

We can find the stones and can make natural Yuteki Temmoku glaze in Ishigaki island. So we decided to make highest rank of pottery with our treasures of sea inside of pottery.

Why we put the color of the sea inside of pottery.

The beautiful sea is just 10 meter from our studio. The marine blue and emerald green sea are around the island. So we can not make pottery without sea color.

Why we are only one in the world.

Potter usually uses translucent glaze and colorant for making tile. So contraction rate between glaze and pottery are the same, so it is not broken.

Potter also uses colored glass, so he or she can control color. However, all products are the same color.

I use mineral stones and clear glass. This is an only one technique in the world.

The glass surface is no catch. Usually there are catches on the surface of glass because of the difference of contraction rate between glass and clay. The fusion of glass and ceramic or pottery was impossible last time. However, my father succeeded in 1964. I am carrying on and developing and innovate the technique day by day.

Why Ishigaki-yaki pottery used for creative　French, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese　foods?

As we know there is no blue foods in this world, all the foods like fresh meat and vegetables match with our plates. Please imagine the delicious red lobster and white asparagus, or even variety of Sushi on the Ishigaki plate, you will love it.
