History of Yuteki Tenmoku

Yuteki Tenmoku originated at Tenmoku Mountain in China. Powered green tea was very popular with the Sung Dynasty and during this time Tenmoku tea bowls started to be used instead of celadon porcelain, especially among Zen priests where it gained increasing popularity. Tenmoku Mountain has many temples and so also had a lot of student priests who went there to study. It was through these Zen priests that the Tenmoku tea bowl was introduced to Japan. Later these tea bowls were named Tenmoku Chawan.

Originally only tea bowls from Kensan(Kenyou City China) were called Tenmoku Chawan however now Tenmoku describes just the style of pottery which has been made, not the place where it was made.
